Summer Time & The Livin' is Easy

This past weekend Kelsey and I jetted off to Cabo San Lucas to celebrate the kick off of summer and for surviving our second year in college. It had been some time since our last Cabo visit so we were excited to hit Medano Beach and see all the action we had been missing.

While hanging out at the Mango Deck, Kelsey noticed a boat out in the water with Body Glove logos. Not just any boat but a catamaran, and aboard that boat was our friend Cortez, whom we had not seen in a couple years. Excited to see such a new attraction in the water, Kelsey and I decided we had to check it out.

With just a hop, skip and a water taxi ride later, we were aboard the Body Glove Catamaran with Captain Cortez, First Mate TJ and their trusty water pup, Bailey.

Within minutes we were sailing far from the lively chaos of Medano's sandy beach and out into the beautiful and calm Sea of Cortez. Although Kelsey and I have been to Cabo countless times, seeing the iconic arc from a boat up close and personal was like seeing Cabo for the very first time all over again. Basking in the sunshine we sailed for about an hour out to the Pacific side.

Out at sea, we hopped into the water and floated around on rafts. For a moment there, I laid back and closed my eyes, and thought to myself, I am living the dream. Just us and the ocean, and Bailey of course. Bailey was one fearless water dog. It was as if she had lived on a boat her whole life. The second you tossed a toy off the boat she was right into the water retrieving it.

After some serious relaxation time, we climbed back onto the catamaran and headed for the shore. Little did we know that even though we were on our way back, the adventure was far from over. One of the fishing lines we had in the water was spinning like crazy, we had caught a fish without even trying!

Kelsey got first hand experience in reeling in the fish. After a difficult 10 minute battle, kelsey, with the help of the crew, wrestled a decent sized fish right up onto the boat! For a first timer you could say she was quite the fish reeling champ.

We took pictures and celebrated Kelsey's first catch. It was a great way to end the adventurous day.

Surf-A-Thon To Benefit Ocean Conservation

June 20 is International Surf Day and Project Save Our Surf has teamed up with the Surfrider Foundation and Surfing Magazine to present SURF 24, an all day surfing marathon to benefit our beautiful oceans. Enjoy live music, celebrity appearances, entertainment, and more. Event kicks off at 11 am on June 19 beside the legendary Huntington Beach Pier and benefits Heal the Bay, Inside the Outdoors, and the Surfrider Foundation.

Whether you live near the coast or not the ocean a vital part of our every day lives. Below Heal the Bay offers up some examples of why the ocean is important to all of us.

Why the Ocean is Important

Food
All over the world, people depend on fish and seafood for their daily food. More than 1 billion people worldwide depend on fish as their primary source of protein. Many of these people fish to feed themselves—they spend their days on the water bringing home enough seafood to feed their families. Unfortunately, as we pollute our oceans, we see more and more contamination in seafood. Some seafood is not even safe to eat anymore. Also, pollution decimates habitat and fish populations, meaning that there are fewer and fewer fish to catch. Just as important, fisheries around the world currently employ about 200 million people. If fish populations decrease, these people will find themselves with jobs.

Product Ingredients
You might not like seafood, but chances are you eat it every single day. Seaweed, one of the building blocks of the marine food chain, is a very important ingredient in many of our daily products. It’s often found in ice cream, toothpaste, brownie mixes, chocolate milk, coffee creamer, cottage cheese, egg substitutes, evaporated milk, frozen foods, desserts, frozen yogurt, infant formula, margarine, mayonnaise, multiple vitamins, relish, salad dressing, sour cream, and yogurt, to name a few. Seaweed is listed on a label as carrageenan, alginate, or beta-carotene. Carrageenan is a derivative of red algae that is used in gelling and stabilizing foods, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and industrial products. You might find Carrageenan in your ice cream or toothpaste. Alginates are algal derivatives from brown algae that are used as a thickener, creamer, and a stabilizer. You might find alginates in your brownie mix or salad dressings. Beta-carotene is an algal derivative (it can come from green algae) that is a yellow-orange food coloring sometimes found in cheese or mayonnaise.

Recreation
Our beaches and oceans are also very important for recreation. Here in Southern California, millions of people spend time on the beach throughout the year. If our oceans are dangerously polluted, we won’t be able to swim, surf, fish, dive or sail on those beautiful summer weekends. Not to mention, the beautiful coastlines that make California famous (and the reason many of us live here) suffer from ocean pollution issues.

Tourism
Throughout the world, people depend on tourism for their income. In California, tourism is a major industry, with visitors bringing more than $12 billion each year into the state (the Gross State Product for coastal tourism and recreation in 2000 exceeded $12 billion). Restaurants and hotels are full of people from all over the world who come to LA to go to the beach. In the Santa Monica Bay alone, beaches average 45 million visits per year. And in 2002, 22 million visitors spent $11 billion dollars in LA. Santa Monica generated $1.08 billion alone. If our beaches are dirty and unsafe, our economy will suffer.

Biodiversity
As we learned in beginning biology classes, food webs are the basis of life. All ecosystems depend on all of the individual species to make a complete, and healthy, whole. When we start removing threads from that food web, the ecosystem becomes unstable and less able to recover from natural catastrophes. We face unforeseen consequences as well—who knows which animals depend on a basic (and fragile) organism that might succumb to pollution? Every aspect of the ecosystem is vital to the ocean. When one species is in danger, the whole ocean is in danger too. And when the oceans are in danger, we are too.

Oxygen
As you know, plants produce oxygen. We depend on plants to absorb the carbon dioxide we exhale, and to produce fresh oxygen for us to breathe. Ocean plants (like algae or phytoplankton) in the ocean produce 60% of the oxygen we breathe. Without ocean plants, we wouldn’t have enough air to breathe. For every 10 breaths you take, the ocean gave you 6. That’s reason enough to work to protect it.

Sun Protection Guidelines for Children

Next week is "National Sun Protection Week," and we would like to share tips for protecting you and your children's skin against sunburn, skin damage and the development of skin cancer. The following tips are those presented by AboutKidsHealth:

- Check the current UV index forecast for your region.
- Reduce your child’s exposure to the sun.
- Plan outdoor activities early or late in the day to avoid peak sunlight hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the UVR levels are highest. Stay in the shade as much as possible when outside.
- Dress your child for sun protection.
- Dress your child in protective clothing to cover the upper back, arms, and legs, a hat with a wide brim, and sunglasses. Be sure to cover your child’s upper back when she is swimming.
- Use sunscreen to protect your child’s skin.
- Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen (UVA and UVB) with a sun protection factor (SPF) equal to 15 or higher. Reapply the sunscreen frequently, every one and a half hours, or more frequently if it is sunny or your child is perspiring heavily. Use a water-resistant sunscreen whenever your child is swimming.

Because water fitness is great for all skill levels, an aqua fitness routine can be as simple as walking in the pool or doing a full on intervals training session. When you are ready, water weights and buoyancy aids can be used to increase your workout and build more muscle tone. Innovative Aquatic Intervals

•Interval training is designed to alternate between periods of work and periods of active recovery or rest (less intense segments of training).

•Pace yourself; exercise should be challenging, but not painful! At the same time, push yourself to train hard, you should be breathing harder and faster on the work segments.

•Begin with about 1 minute of work and 2-3 minutes of recovery. When that feels easy, increase the amount of activity while decreasing the amount of recovery.

•It is important to stretch your muscles before and after you work out to help prevent injury.

STRETCH – 5-10 minutes

WARM UP – 5 minutes

Heel High Jog: Travel in a Box Pattern - 8 to 10 Rreps.
Jumping Jacks: 8 to 10 Reps.
Jacks in 3’s: Jump Out, In, Out & Bounce Out / Jump In, Out, In & Bounce In - 8 to 10 Reps.
Ankle Reach Front / Heel Reach Back: Reach opposite hand toward foot but maintain tall posture throughout - 8 to 10 reps. on each side

TRAINING CYCLE ONE

Jumping Jacks: 8 to 10 Reps.
Level II Jack: Bend at knees & hips as if sitting in a chair, shoulders at water’s surface; gently touch the pool bottom, but do not jump - 8 to 10 Reps.
Level II Jack & Tuck: Tuck the knees to the chest as the feet come together for each Jack, concentrate on contacting the abdominals as you tuck - 8 to 10 Reps.
Tuck Hold: Tuck the knees to the chest maintaining the feet off the pool bottom by sculling the arms vigorously; gradually increase the time you stay suspended - 8 to 10 Reps.

RECOVERY
Knee Lifts Front: 8 to 10 Reps.
Knee Lifts Corner: 8 to 10 Reps.
Heel High Jog, Legs Wide: 8 to 10 Reps.

TRAINING CYCLE TWO

Knee High Jog: 8 to 10 Reps.
White Water Run: Run as fast as you can, pulling the elbows behind your body as you pump the arms. Create as much turbulence, “white water”, as you can - 8 to 10 Reps.
Level II Tire Run: Drop into seated position and run with the feet Out, Out, In, In as if running through tires - 8 to 10 Reps.

RECOVERY
Jog or Walk around pool with various strides:
•Backward
•Side Steps
•Giant Steps
•Walk a Tightrope

TRAINING CYCLE THREE

Ski Variations - 8 to 10 Reps. each
•Cross Country Ski (Lead with the palms for more resistance as the arms swing at the sides.)
•Cross Country Uphill (Dig deeper with the arms, increase the stride length, tuck the knees as the legs switch positions)
•Downhill Moguls (Jump side to side; feet together & knees slightly bent)
•Level II Moguls (drop to seated position, but increase the distance between jumps and tuck the knees to the chest as you alternate sides!)

RECOVERY
Level II Jack with CC SKI ARMS: Alternating arm swings front & back - 8 to 10 Reps.
Level II Ski with JACK ARMS: Lift arms laterally & return to sides - 8 to 10 Reps.

Chasing the Sun -- A Suggestion for Finding the Sun Once Again

Winter is without a doubt here for most states in the US -- record snow fall and rain has been leaving many dreaming of a way to escape, including me! I'm a California girl at heart -- to me this means that I hold the sun & the Pacific Ocean dear to my heart.

Tomorrow is going to be another chilly, rainy day here in the OC -- so if I could I'd jump on a plane and head to one of my favorite warm spots in Central America -- Bocas Del Toro, Panama. There you can find a pristine nature preserve and Rain Forest -- not to mention the ocean water is so warm you can stay in for hours. Oh...and the vitamin D is easily accessed there -- so no need for sun therapy for a few months if you live in a dark, rainy climate.

The New Face of Obi Wan

There are many creatures great and small across the land looking for their big break -- few of these creatures are as kindhearted and well-mannered as Obi Wan Walters the Body Glove hound.

Obi is one of the official spokespups for the all-new Body Glove Pet line, in-store in April 2010. Adopted by CWIC Founder & President Cindi Waters when he was just a few months old, he soon became an office regular and a source of brightness for Team CWIC.

One day at the office, Walters had him try on a pair of Body Glove swim goggles and surprisingly found out that he didn't mind wearing them. Soon thereafter, it was suggested that he be a part of Walter's Fortune Small Business photo shoot, in which he wore his favorite pair of goggles and posed graciously for the camera. His magazine debut took the business world by storm and led him to center stage as an official Body Glove pup for the soon to be released Body Glove line of products.

Following his debut on CNBC and first official Body Glove product photo shoot, he was still the sweet dog he was before...but the office is wondering if it has gone to his head after he recently dragged his doggy water bowl into the cubicle of Walters' executive assistant and kindly suggested that she refill it promptly.

Whale Watching Tour in San Diego

Saturday, December 19 was a most beautiful day in San Diego, California. The sun was shining over the glassy, blue Pacific ocean and the sky was so clear that one could see all the way to the Islas Coronados just over the border in Mexican waters.

I set out with Adventure Rib Rides (www.adventureribrides.com), a whale watching tour company that utilizes US Navy SEAL Rigid Inflatable Boats (R.I.B), to share their wonders of the sea with men, women and children from all over the world. Unlike typical whale watching excursions that take place in large yachts that hold 60-200 people and allow whale watchers to view the sights from 25 feet off of the water, Adventure Rib Rides seat six passengers max. and sit an arms length distance from the water.

The tour was conducted Captains Ken and Sean who offered a wealth of information on the sights within the San Diego Harbor, whale behavior, oceanography and more.

Once we got out of port, we were amazed at the calmness of the ocean and quickly found ourselves in the middle of a huge pod of dolphins. Our new friends decided to follow us and play within our wake. I was able to brace myself near the front end of the boat and look into their eyes as they turned on their sides to get a better glimpse of us human beings.

My favorite dolphin decided to turn on his back and swim upside down! It amazed me how fast he could move in such a precarious position. The connection I experienced with the personality-rich creatures was so very powerful...I'll never forget the moment as long as I live!

For 3 hours, we enjoyed the ocean and the refreshing sun shining above us. Since it is early in the season, we didn't see any whales...but I will take my friends and family again soon to experience the adventure of being on the ocean in a R.I.B boat.

Whale Migration in the Pacific

It is that time of year again in the Pacific Ocean!! Thousands of whales (mainly Grey whales) are currently migrating south to breed in the warmth of the Mexican waters. Just today, I heard from a friend in San Diego that Grey whales aren't the only thing that has been gracing the waters down south -- more than a dozen Orca whales spotted off the coast this morning!

When I asked her what they were doing down in San Diego, she said that it is still a mystery to local scientists. "But you wouldn't believe it!" she said. "Local whale watching boats have reported that the Orcas were acting very similar to dolphins! They were jumping out of the water and interacting with whale watching boats like they've never seen!"

I'll be heading out to San Diego to catch some whale watching action this weekend and will bring pictures back to share. Stay tuned...

A Message from Annie
Breathing underwater changed my life. Originally from Chicago, I never dreamed that I would spend the past two decades living and working around the world. Traveling from Indonesia to Galapagos, Belize to Papua New Guinea, I have explored and documented underwater life on our planet! Inspired by the words of my grandmother when I was only 10-years-old, "You have to travel when you're a youngster because when you get to be my age, you can't climb the mountains!" After graduating from college with a journalism degree, I wasn't ready to get a job, start a family and do all the more traditional things that most of us are raised to pursue. So I saved my money and bought a plane ticket to Australia. There I learned to scuba dive in my second week and then didn't return back to the states for four years! Learning to Scuba dive gave me a freedom I have never experienced on land.

One of the reasons I was excited to contribute to CWIC's blog is because I would never have been able to Scuba dive if I had never learned to swim. From the time we were in diapers, my mom had us in the local swimming pool for family night swims. Eventually, I joined the swim team when I was 9 and grew up with green hair -- due to all the time we spent in the pool. What I didn't know at the time was that my mom had a fear of water and to this day she hates to put her head underwater. The amazing thing is that she didn't instill her fear in any of her children and sent us to swimming lessons. (She was a true hero, my mom...because the greatest of all heroes don't pass on their fears to those who they guide, but they help them exceed their very own limitations.) It is much easier to learn to swim when you are young, but I know that it can be done by adults who want to get over their fears of water...they too can enter into the magical world found when snorkeling and Scuba diving.

Children are 40% of our population and 100% of our future. A few years ago, I founded www.DiveIntoYourImagination.com to change the way that new generations view the ocean. I spent nearly two decades underwater and believe that real ocean animals are much more exciting than those in cartoons. A few of my favorite animals include pygmy sea horses the size of your baby fingernail; cuttlefish that communicate by changing the color and texture of their skin; and Whale Sharks, the largest fish in the ocean...some growing to be up to 60 feet in length!

I still pinch myself when I think about diving with Great White Sharks in Mexico and bottle nose dolphins in Belize. The ocean is the most magical place, and it was all possible because my mom taught me to swim and my grandmother told me to travel...and there is much more to be told.

The Tub is the Perfect Place to Start

Our customers are always asking for ways that they can get their children comfortable with snorkeling equipment.

Leslie Connolly of Vancouver, BC sent an adorable photo of her grandson Jake practicing in the bathtub.

Thanks for the picture Leslie!! We strongly suggest that children first practice snorkeling in the tub. It is a great way for them to learn how to breathe calmly through a snorkel and get used to the way a mask feels.

Once children have mastered snorkeling in a bathtub they can then move to the pool.

Leslie shared with me that Jake did make the jump from the bathtub to the pool. He loved using the snorkel and mask so much that he was bound and determined to learn to swim with the Body Glove Jr. Lucent/Jr. Whistle combo.

I've asked Leslie to send more pictures when the Summer returns in BC. We look forward to seeing how Jake is progressing!!

What to Look for in a Snorkeling Spot

Planning a trip to a tropical locale for the holidays? If so, we strongly suggest you enjoy a snorkeling adventure or two! When you start researching snorkeling spots, you will notice that there are many to choose from -- so you may ask yourself, "how do I know I'm choosing a winner?"

Here are some key features to look for in a snorkeling spot:

- A protected lagoon, lake, cove or bay
- Calm waters
- Good underwater visibility
- The warmer the water the better (or wear a high quality wetsuit to keep warm)
-Lots of sea life to view - fish, sea turtles, eels, fauna, coral, rock formations and more.
-One that isn't too crowded.
- Easy entry and exit from snorkeling area

If this will be your first snorkeling adventure, make sure that you practice before you attempt to experience an ocean or fresh water environment.

A Family Snorkeling Adventure

One morning, my friends Jane and Mark called me to get ideas for a family snorkeling vacation. Mark had never put on a mask, but Jane had been snorkeling many times. Snorkeling with her brother and parents in the Greek Isles remains one of Jane's fondest memories, and she was eager to share a similar experience with her own family. I suggested the Virgin Islands, where abundant marine life thrives in warm tropical waters. After our phone conversation, they took their children - Jessie, 8, and Peter, 6 - to a local dive shop and outfitted them with gear.

"Peter learned to use his mask and snorkel in the tub before we tried the ocean, and it really helped," Jane says. On their trip, they had an amazing time together: "The four of us held hands, making a big circle with our heads in the middle, and floated over a huge school of tiny florescent fish. And it was really safe for the children. The only danger was not wanting to get out of the water."

Floating on the surface of a calm, clear, sea and watching fish dance between shimmering shafts of sunlight is a pleasure an entire family can enjoy together. Critter Profile: Nemo the Clown Fish

In the Disney classic tale Finding Nemo, we are introduced a breed of fish that plays several roles in the vast ocean. Their beauty has the power to take our breaths away, and at the same time, they have the power save an important ocean c0-dweller from destruction and transform in ways unknown to man.

The following are several details on the clown fish that may surprise you:

- There are 28 species including the Skunk, Barrier Reef, Twoband, Mauritian, Tomato, Whitesnout, Madagascar, Pink Skunk and Saddleback.
- They live in small groups: within these groups are only one reproductive male & female. The rest of the fish in the group are non-reproductive.
- The beautiful fish lays eggs on flat surfaces and usually spawn during a full moon.
- When they are born, all clown fish are males. (So how do they mate?...you may be asking...) Some change their sex in order to mate. And...if a female dies during a mating session, another male will be promoted to female and will then change its sex. (what!? Yes, it's true!)
- Clown fish range in size from 4 to 7 inches as adults.
- They are omnivores, feeding off of algae, plankton, mollusks, and crustacean.
- Sea anemones are protected by clown fish because they feed on parasites that are harmful to anemones.
- Clown fish are one of two species that can survive the poison of sea anemones. A mucous membrane coats their bodies for protection.
- They prefer the warmer waters of the Indian and Pacific oceans.
- Find clown fish at these favorite dive & snorkel destinations: Great Barrier Reef, Red Sea, Fiji, Malaysia, Thailand, Maldives and Indonesia.

What to Look for in the Pacific Ocean

So by now you may have heeded our advice and gotten yourself a snorkel, mask and set of fins and are about to embark on your first snorkeling experience. But wait now, do you know what you are going to look for while you're in the ocean?

This begins a series that I will be writing on various oceans and what you can find within them. Let's start with the Pacific Ocean...

Naturally, if you are in Tahiti, the crystal clear water speaks for itself. In such places, the fish are brighter than any highlighter you have ever seen, and the coral is quite literally swarming with so much wildlife it looks more like kids around an ice cream truck. Really, being in waters that tropical is dreamlike. But unfortunately for West Coasters, few have the means to scoot off to Tahiti to do some snorkeling. What many of them don't know is that the Southern California Coast offers plenty of snorkeling adventures.

Using Laguna Beach as an example -- one can find the bright orange Garibaldi fish (the official fish of California), eels, octopus, calico bass, tree fish, bat stars and purple sea urchins. The hot snorkeling spot in Laguna by far is Shaw's Cover. You can find all of the above there.

La Jolla Cove near San Diego also offers amazing snorkeling adventures. It provides snorkelers the ability to navigate through beautiful kelp forests and hang with rays, more Garibaldi and sometimes seals and harmless varieties of sharks.

Up and down the coast, but much harder to spot than many other varieties of fish is the black sea bass. Once in a while snorkelers and divers come across them and are blown away by their mass...sometimes weighing in at more than 150 pounds. Their massiveness may inspire you to swim away as fast as possible, but there is nothing to be afraid of, they are as harmless as any creature can be. These giants are considered endangered species, so please don't get any wild ideas that involve spear fishing or trying to take one home as a pet.

Now some will scoff at the next thing that I am going to mention, but try to use your imagination. Not far from Laguna at a place called Pirate Bay, Disneyland has a pirate named Captain Jack. I've seen him and admired his boldness...and sometimes envision myself as Captain Anthony aboard the Black Swirl...on my way to Catalina to unearth the biggest booty ever discovered. Wow, I just let that one get away from me just a little :-)

Anyway, whether or not you find treasure or any of the creatures I mentioned, enjoy yourself in the water. It's hard not to. What feels better than being weightless as you sway with the gentle currents and peer down at the last frontier on our beautiful planet -is knowing that you are a guest in what is truly a miracle, our beautiful ocean...

Essential to Snorkeling

In a land far away, an activity dubbed snorkeling was popular. It was "all the rage" and all the "cool kids" were doing it. That land was earth and snorkeling was the hit activity in beach towns and beach resorts. Kids and adults alike populated the reefs with one goal, actually more like a DREAM: to view the ocean in a way never before seen, as a fish! But before they could embark on their endeavors, they had to obtain one vital component. The one piece allow them to truly enjoy the ocean.

The one and the only.....snorkel keeper!

Wow. Really Anthony, did you just write a whole hook driven by the Lord of the Rings theme to explain a snorkel keeper. Yes.. oh boy...

All kidding aside, a snorkel keeper is really no bigger than a silver dollar but without it snorkeling can be difficult. Some don't even know what one is -- they may have heard the term -- but just to be clear, a snorkel keeper is a connector piece that holds the mask and the snorkel together. IT allows you to move freely without worrying that your snorkel will submerge and having the piece of mind knowing that the snorkel won't grow fins and decide to swim away; it can't, it's attached to your face!!

Most keepers come attached to the snorkel with a clip -- you then attache it to your mask strap. Once attached correctly they are quite secure, are user friendly and can be easily to be swapped with other masks.

So when you think snorkeling, don't just think snorkel and mask, make sure you have that keeper. Because without it, you just won't enjoy the ocean as effortlessly as you should. It's your little plastic key to ocean fun! Sorry, at CWIC we get a little excited about this stuff. Really, you should see us. I typed this whole blog with full snorkeling regalia on. I have to go, my mask is foggy and I need to find a body of water. Hasta Luego!

A Day in the Sun with the Huntington Beach Jr. Guards

We shipped out from the Long Beach harbor at 7am on Monday -- I, along with 40 Jr. Lifeguards and their instructors, pointed our noses toward Catalina on the "Great Escape" dive boat. From the moment I walked on board, I was taken in as one of their very own and enjoyed getting to know as many of them as possible.

HB Lifeguard instructors Kathy and Rory were amazing people - we spoke of the importance of the program that was developed in 1963 for youth 9-17 years of age. "It provides so much," explained Kathy. "Kids need purpose, community and an outlet for their excess energy. I can't tell you how the program has bettered the lives of so many." Kathy, now a mother of four children, has been a part of the program since she was a teenager. Each summer she shares her love of the ocean and water safety. "I can't think of a better way to spend my summers," said Kathy with a smile on her face.

Rory is most impressed with how the youth progress over the 8 week program. "I see boys and girls come in out of shape, unenthusiastic about life and just plan blah," he explained. "And then as the weeks go by, their eyes are wide and they get into great shape. They really come alive...this is the best summer job in the world."

And for anyone who has doubts about the upcoming generation -- I'd like to quell your fears. The group was well-mannered, well versed and passionate about life. I spoke with many of them about their futures, their hopes for their careers and their love of being out in the ocean.

After about 2 1/2 hours on the open sea, Catalina came into view. We anchored about one football field off of the shore and the kids were more than ready to jump into the ocean. Kathy introduced me as part of CWIC and brought out masks and snorkels that our Founder and President Cindi Walters donated for the 2009 season. Kathy and I shared information on using a snorkel, clearing purge valves, attaching snorkel keepers and more. The kids then lined up to receive their own mask/snorkel combo...and they were off!

I jumped in with them and we roamed through huge kelp beds, discovered bright orange Garibaldi fish (California's official state fish) and other smaller varieties. A couple of the kids took it upon themselves to be my guide -- their kindness
and willingness to take me in as one of their own was awesome! In the afternoon, we held fun filled competitions that inspired the kids to laugh, cheer and band together.

After a long day in the water, we headed back to the mainland. The sun was shining and we were all in a content daze -- enjoying the salty breeze and the water lapping up against the sides of the boat as we cruised. I was so very thankful all the way home that I had the opportunity to experience a day in the life of the Huntington Beach Junior Lifeguard program. And I'd like to inspire parents around the world to consider getting your kids involved in a local Jr. Guard program! Seeing the Jr. Lifeguards in action drove home a major point: we as human beings need to reconnect with nature -- find community with others -- and get our bodies moving! True purpose & ultimate peace will follow...

Ireland's Wonderful Beaches

What comes to mind when you think of Ireland? Lets both think, rain, greenery everywhere and small cars. However what the rest of the world doesn't think of is Ireland's wonderful summer beaches!

As we all know, Ireland isn't a place for much sunshine -- many days see dark clouds, lots of rain and people hiding behind four walls by a fireplace. This is true much of the year but if you're able head over to Ireland in their summer time! If you are as lucky as I have been for the last 30 days on the Ireland coast -- you may find yourself loving its expansive, white sand beaches.

Imagine walking to the beach and if you live any where near a beach you probably see people there all the time, but -- well in Ireland you find stretches of beach that no one has enjoyed in months. I can't tell you the honor this Southern California boy felt to enjoy the sun on untracked sand.

Portmarnock Strand, where I spent most of my time, was one of the most beautiful beaches I had been to in awhile! Okay yes the water was cold, come on its Ireland, but one of the most interesting things about this beach was that you could walk over hundred yards out in the water and still have the water be waist level, this was very strange concept for me...and an amazing adventure. the second most interesting thing was the way my feet felt on the beach, by this I mean that it felt like I was walking in a home with a hard wood floor that had been flooded...very strange but unique! To fully understand...you need to take a trip to Dublin and check it out...

A WHAT Valve?!?

Purge:

A. To cause evacuation of a person.

B. To clear of imputed guilt or ritual uncleanliness.

C. To put to death or otherwise eliminate (undesirable or unwanted members) from a political organization, government, nation, etc.

D. To rid of whatever is impure or undesirable; cleanse;

purify.

So Option A, no comment. B, Yoga or a confessional should work just fine. C, Jason Bourne would be proud, or confused... He probably wouldn't even remember. D, You mean to effortlessly get rid of the unwanted water in your snorkel?

YES! That is exactly what I mean. A Purge snorkel does just that. Let's say you are snorkeling and a little splash of water drops down your snorkel. You can still breathe but that taste of saltwater lingers in your mouth. With a purge snorkel you can blow air through your snorkel, like shooting a spit wad through a straw, and the excess water will leave through the purge valve located at the bottom of the snorkel, very close to your mouth.

What is this good for? Well, let's say hypothetically that you have been waiting to see this one particular fish, or crab, or eel for what seems like forever. You can tell it's about to happen but all of a sudden, SALT. Salt all in your mouth and it's disgusting. That right there is a perfect time for a Purge. No need to go above surface and clean everything, just purge it out.

Dear First Timer...

This is my letter, to the snorkeler who is about to embark on their first journey into the blue (movie reference intended.) Your mental state is fragile because you are convinced that snorkeling is like nothing you have ever done before and the very thought of being out in the water is more frightening than filing your taxes, rising gas prices, or, the worst going cellphoneless (One word, three syllables) for a week let alone a day!

You need not to worry! Us at CWIC have all been there before and I can assure you, it is totally worth it. Remember being younger, and being terrified of doing a flip on the trampoline? Or maybe you visited an amusement park for the frist time and actually going upside down on a roller coaster, fuhhgettabawditt! Maybe for some of you it was trying something you never ate, for the first time and absolutely loving it. Eventually, you flipped, you rode the coaster, with your hands up the ENTIRE time and yes you even tried that piece of ahi, that spicy pepper, or, um... Lamb. No matter which story is yours, it's hard to explain where the joy we get from these events comes from and finding that next little challenge can be tough but you, the brave little choo-choo that said they could has come upon it, way to go! Snorkeling, it's your next "worth-it" challenge.

First of all, you have to be comfortable. Girls, you have to get over the fact that you will look a little funny in a snorkel mask and guys I promise you will not compromise your wannabe tough guy persona by putting a pair of fins on. What you will find is that while looking for and choosing gear for your next snorkel expedition, color, size, look, or whether or not it all matches is not as nearly important as if it feels good. I can promise, the fish will not care if your little pink accents in your fins match the strings of your bikini which in turn match the color of your mask. You would be wiser to focus on technique so that the fish don't notice you; it will make your experience so much more enjoyable. Remember you are a guest in their home. Think vice versa, a fish three times our size comes stomping around in our house with no coordination whatsoever and just watches us as we... cook breakfast, or maybe read blogs posted by mildly creative interns. *wink*

To elaborate on the technique topic... once you come upon a site with a decent amount of wildlife or you find that you have moved into an area with a group of snorkelers who seem to be already focusing on something, MOVE LESS! It's very important that you kick less and try to completely refrain from using you arms. A good pair of fins is great because it allows you to do minimal work while getting maximum results. That's my one and only ode to the AB-Doer Extreme informercial that has been dominating the paid programming as of late. Anyway, move so little that you actually allow your body to gently rise up and down with the natural bob of the ocean and take time to focus on each and every movement of your legs to insure that you are not going too fast and are totally in control. technique and Etiquette actually go hand in hand. While you do not want to disrupt the natural habitat that has flourished long before you got there, you also do not want to take away from the experience of those around you.

Safety is the last thing I want to touch on. If you worry,"Well I'm just too exposed, I feel too open like there is nothing I can go to or what if I begin to feel lightheaded or need a rest." CWIC to the rescue, with the Hydrosling. Just think, a non bulky alternative to the lifejacket. Takes absolutely no effort to stay afloat and for many, it is the ultimate secutiry. "But CWIC, what about my kids?" Pretty much any watersport provider carries a comfortable fitting very bright orange cap that can be seen from a mile out. Let the Ocean Enfold You...

Cabo San Lucas, the name alone conjures up many images in two college student minds. Endless stretches of beaches, crystal clear water, hopping night clubs and adventure on every corner. What doesn’t come to mind in two youthful and eager adults is space, especially suitcase space. Being a girl, over packing is in our blood and being a boy, bringing next to nothing is normal. Trying to fit all the necessities of a perfect vacation is hard enough already, but now it is even more complicated with all the new rules and regulations that come along with flying. Fun seems to have to stop at 50 pounds.

So aside from the typical items one would pack on a vacation, Mike and I found ourselves having to leave behind our old beloved mask and snorkel because we just couldn’t seem to fit it among all my shoes. That is until we were introduced to Body Glove’s new Enfold mask and snorkel. Unlike your ordinary snorkel, the Enfold is made out of silicon; it was flexible and light and squeezed right into our suitcase.

In no time Mike and I were out snorkeling the gorgeous Mexican reef. The Enfold was so convenient in size and space that Mike could throw it right into his backpack and we would be on way to the beach. He loved being able to walk along the ocean with nothing more than a backpack that fit everything he needed, boys are such minimalists. He also claimed that women flocked to him in amazement of his handy snorkel…Yeah right. Aside from all that, the mask even worked great. Its revolutionary design made the perfect air tight fit, we were able to snorkel all day. And the best part was when we were finished; I folded it right back up into Mike’s bag and we headed to the bar for a much needed cocktail.

It is safe to say that the Enfold was the perfect vacation buddy, a whole day of adventure that ceased to take up precious room in either of our suitcases. We may have never known what was lurking below us if it weren’t for the Enfold, and we realize now that you shouldn’t let space play a factor in your fun. Small, flexible, and easy to use, the Enfold showed Mike and I a whole new side of Cabo we may have otherwise missed out on.

True Exfoliation

The Debate... Does the ocean and all its salty, sandy wonder do good things for your skin and your complexion? Anyone, anyone? I've heard of Old Wives' Tales, but this is surely different. We have all been there; out of the water to lay on our very carefully laid out woven tablet of cloth (towel), and we rest. Maybe you do some people watching, maybe snacking on some fresh fruit (nothing tastes better at the beach than fruit), or like most of us, you doze off. Look at that! It's time to leave. Pack your things, dust yourself off and if you frequent any beach from San Clemente to Newport, get ready to hike, uphill.

When I was younger, this part was the worst... I had the mom who insisted on me wearing the trunks with the mesh OH SO COMFY inner whitey tidy lining. Pop quiz, when sand is added to inner whitey tidy lining of trunks that have been washed more than 67 times, what happens? For a little boy, its pandemonium. more uncomfortable even than the itchy Christmas sweater that sits on the hanger for 364 days but is worn, faithfully; to witness the unwrapping of gifts and careful construction of four walled gingerbread shanty houses. But what does this have to do with the skin...?

You have just got back from the beach, dropped essentials on the ground and wandered towards the shower. Flick the thing on, wait around, examine some incredible tan lines (Good news! Tan ensued!) and finally hop in. This is the incredible part... just rinse. Get the sand out of your hair, off your skin and out of your ears. It works like a scrub!! No need to use a store-bought scrub, just a little body wash, a quick rinse and jump out and somehow, someway, you are exfoliated! Skin looks clear and tan, and just a tan sun kissed. Your eyes look brighter, your teeth are definitely whiter and your hair does that really cool thing where it requires no product, it just molds as if you woke up, but not really, you are disheveled, but high fashion, ya know? Oh, just come out with it, you look good!

So how does this work? in all our fancy scrubs, whether they are apricot scented or a very pretty color, there are small pebble like things. The hygiene companies call them exfoliating cleansers or invigorating textures. People, they are little rocks... In the ocean, there is sand, and salt and compounds that all become stuck to your body as you frolic around and attempt to look cool or like you belong there. When you leave, you pick up more sand and yes, these little compounds remain stuck to you. Think of a visit to the ocean as a full body exfoliation. Advantages over spa as follows; You are in the Sun! You avoid the awkward fact that someone else is rubbing your body and drum roll please... It's probaly around 80-100$ dollars cheaper to pay for parking and a few snacks than go and partake in fancy named treatments that are modeled after what else, NATURE!!!

So go explore the ocean: It is exfoliating, it is outdoors and for goodness sakes, it feels Great!!

Where Is Your Nitsch?

What do Herbert Nitsch, Jacques-Yves Cousteau and the standard sun burnt tourist have in common? They dive!! Three very different names and very different backgrounds but connected in the fact that they spend time in the water. One is the bravest human being on the planet, the other a true innovator and the last (guess who) is in need of some lessons. Unless you are swimming competitively, water activities can be broken down into three categories; Free Diving, Scuba Diving, and Snorkeling. Now please, Proceed…

The tourist devours blended fruity concoctions, all inclusive anything and Snorkeling. Le Commandant Cousteau fancied his croissant and fathered the Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus. SCUBA! But wait, who is this Nitsch Fellow? WELL, funny you should ask being as he is the World record holder for No Limit Free Diving, 214 meters, down, underwater, in ONE BREATH. Translation = Unless somehow Herbert Nitsch himself tracked down my measly blog in attempt to bolster his own mental resume and is now reading it, no reader of mine will ever compare to the set of lungs and err, yeah, this guy has. More to come on Nitsch… Snorkeling is beckoning.

Small tube, set of flippers and a trusty mask… jump in, because you are now a veteran snorkeler. Most snorkeling is done in the warmer climates, where calmer waters are and something interesting, whether it be huge kelp beds, coral, or fish brighter than Fruit Loops can be found. Quick notes about the art of the snorkel; You are already floating in the water with fins you are not used to and a mask that enlarges your eyeballs at least double the size, please don’t draw more attention to yourself by being the one that splashes around imitating your household washing machine. You will soon have no friends in the water, lots of sand around you and maybe if you really have learned your lesson, a few friendly reminders from the coral that they may look pretty but they have a dark, or sharp side. Truth is, snorkeling is great. With nothing more than a plastic tube, the average person can glimpse at what wonder the ocean has in store. May it be the schools of fish or slimy sea cucumber, the sea anemone or the not so friendly sea urchin, the shore has so much to offer one who is willing to simply watch. Be patient, and realize that you are foreign to them, foreign and 6 times most of their size. Think if the tables were turned, a 60 ft fish, walking into your backyard… Howdy Neighbor!

Remember in Finding Nemo, the cleaner fish in the aquarium with the handle bar moustache and the French accent so aptly named Jacques? Yeah he has nothing to do with Jacques Cousteau, but hey, he was French and so is our beloved father of modern day scuba, Jacques-Yves Cousteau. Before Cousteau, if a diver wanted to stay underwater by way of an external air source, they had to be hooked up to an oxygen machine and wherever they swam, a very bulky, rather annoying airline was hooked up to their helmet. Cousteau invented the aqualung and now, SCUBA is not just a way of diving, but a way of life. Those who scuba swear it is the most rewarding experience and being part of the water for that long is a treat each and every time. More training is required but that is expected being as deeper depths are attained and if the technique is not performed properly, oh boy, you are in for more than just a little earache. Learn it the right way and never have a problem, plus, it looks cool. Really cool.

Free Diving, where have you been all of my life. This sport, you bet it’s a sport, is incredible. Courage, athleticism, a little bit of insanity and vast amounts of water sprinkled with as much oxygen as you can fill your lings with in one breath. If you bottled up the guts and pinch of madness in an airtight container (pun intended) that come with bungee jumping and released them into the ocean, you birthed free diving, congratulations. By definition, free diving is any kind of swimming done with no breathing apparatus. It could be children having contests to see who holds their breath underwater longest. Or maybe who can go “there and back” on one breath. Free diving is a loose definition which is why most likely, if you have been in the water, you have free dove. Most common free diving includes Spear fishing, underwater Hockey and underwater Rugby. Okay so the second two are not common at all but wow, how do you get tickets? Competitive apnea is really where the sport gets its exposure. All sorts of free diving are recognized consisting of fin and no fin depth contests, assisted and unassisted contests and plain old contests to see who can hold stay under longer. But who is Nitsch? Imagine this, grabbing a few weights, one huge monofin and the biggest breath you ever inhaled and diving the length of 2 ½ football fields and then coming back up!! Yeah, if cheerleading is considered a sport, free diving gets its own category. Goes with skydiving, arm-wrestling, rugby, and unassisted rock-climbing. Herbert, I’m not worthy.

Water is for some relaxing, for others entertainment, and for a select few, a chance to prove their athleticism to the world. No matter what you find yourself doing in the water, do it. Because being weightless and floating seamlessly, being a part of what was here long before us and what will be here long after us, it’s an indescribable feeling.

BizzaroTurtles, UV Rays, and Children

Bizzaro – a world made famous by the sitcom Seinfeld. Jerry would go on and on about a land where left was right and right was left… A truly bizarre land where Newman was good and Jerry was bad, where Banyon was funny and Jerry’s bits just bombed. The fictitious world of Bizzaro may be more real than fake – not the extreme of left being right and right being left… Bizzaro holds true as we compare ourselves to our shelled friends of the deep, the sea turtle.

From sunglasses to sunscreen to rash guards, if they don't not have UV protection then you don’t want them! At the Turtle Store Emporium located 2 miles deep in the ocean blue (it is their Costco – just left and on the outskirts of Atlantis – that city is so pretentious, they will not allow any chain stores inside their city limits), turtles come from far and wide looking for UV enhancers. They need, they want, they must have the UV to live and grow strong…

Turtles treat UV rays like milk – building strong bones and shells. They may seem like they are being lazy as they lope around with their heads held to the sky, but in fact they are doing just what they need to do for survival. Their sunbathing not only feels good, it inspires their shells to grow, keeps their bones strong and extends their lives. Some live to 30 years or more. And their distant cousin – the giant tortoise – can live into their late 100s, yet Willard Scott of the Today Show never gives them any love, neither do his friends at Smuckers. Not to mention, the long standing legend from India that has a tortoise named Adwaitya who lived to be 255 years old.

And then there are us human beings – we lounge in the sun (because we are lazy) and we enjoy the water like our shelled friend – the difference, turtles glide through the water, we flop through it. And as it pertains to UV rays, they are both a blessing and a curse. In moderation, they assist our bodies in producing Vitamin D (oddly enough found in milk, but as we all learned from Ron Burgandy, milk is not good on a hot day) – this strengthens our bones and teeth and helps us resist various internal cancers. The curse comes from us lounging around like turtles for hours at a time without the proper protection. Since the 80s, there has been a noticeable hole growing in the ozone which has led to a growing number of skin cancer cases – for both children and adults.

Proper protection may mean different things for different people and age groups. For adults lounging around the pool watching their potbellies grow in the sun, a potent sunscreen may be sufficient. But for most children, if they are near a pool, on a beach or at a river, most likely they are jumping in and out of the water. Sunscreen may partially do the trick but one can never be too sure – it rubs off, dissolves in the water and may not be applied evenly. That leads to a funny, all be it uncomfortable, sun burn for the child.

You need to be especially aware of UV rays when you are taking kids to the water – UV rays may not seem as dangerous as a shark or snapping turtle (they bit way harder than sharks and they are not confusing you with a seal, they are just mean and want to bite you). The message – skin and eye protection are key. Get a float suit or rash guard with UV protection – you and the kids should be wearing sunscreen with UV protection – finally wear both goggles and sunglasses (not at the same time – plus wear the goggles on land and the sunglasses underwater, wait that is Bizzaro world; so the opposite and make sure the lens have UV protection).

Modern Day Alcatraz, Swim & Purpose

Team CWIC has come in contact with an amazing woman...

We are proud to salute Susan Odom Midgett of Greensboro, North Carolina for her dedication to raising money for the Vilaj Espwa orphanage in Haiti by swimming in Alcatraz Sharkfest Swim on August 15th, 2009.

Susan's goal is to raise $100,000 for the orphanage, which houses 600 children and provides 3000 meals for the children and all locals who travel by foot or donkey to the facility.

Her devotion to a cause greater than herself should be recognized by all and is a reminder that we can use our passions, hopes and dreams to change the lives of people in need.

Susan's feat isn't going to be an easy one -- her first challenge is to raise the money and her second is to brave the icy, current heavy waters off off Alcatraz Island. And then there are the sharks...! Not to worry -- people participate in this event each year and there has yet to be a shark attack!! The most realistic battle is the one she will have within -- to push herself to keep moving forward and to believe in her abilities.

We salute you Susan for your vision -- and for using your love of swim to better the world!

An Ocean Swim -- Simply Amazing...

There is something to be said about the power of water. The other day I was stressed and needed to unwind, so I headed to my favorite spot in Laguna Beach with a friend hoping a dip in the ocean would make a difference. My friend had a camera and I had no idea that she caught my entire adventure...

I stood on the sandy shore questioning whether or not I was going to go through with it and then muttered to myself, "just dive in...be bold." I tugged my wetsuit over my bikini and yanked the zipper closed. Then thought again, "should I do this? It's gonna be cold!!!" The knowledge that my 3/2 wetsuit would keep me nice and toasty in the water did little to calm my hesitation as a chilly breeze blew in from the West. I liken the decision to jump into cold water to the tough decisions we have to make in life -- once there is forward momentum, though, the things we fear aren't as big and bad as we make them out to be.

Taking a deep breath, I went for it -- running toward the shore break my toes came in contact with the icy water. I moved a little faster and took a dive into a crested wave. Then came the usual shock to the system. "Whewwww!" A chill swept down from my head to my toes.

Swimming beyond the shore break, my body warmed and I was magically at one with the water -- revitalized and free from the stresses of life on land, or between the four walled world in which I spend the majority of my hours.

My reverie was interrupted when a surfer to the right waved and pointed in my direction. "Look!" he exclaimed with a smile on his face! Just about three feet away were four fins sticking out of the water. My initial instinct was to scramble for the shore and yell "shark!!!" And then four magnificent and adorable dolphin noses bobbed into the air. The pod continued to head in my direction, so close that I could almost reach out and touch one of their tails. They then circled around the surfer and I while playing in the waves like pups. A few minutes into my astonishment, they zipped off in the direction of Aliso Creek Beach, known for plentiful kelp beds on which they feed in the evenings.

Back on shore, I sat bundled in a towel to watch the sunset while wondering to myself why I don't do this more often...

The History Of Fins

What do you call the big rubber shoes you throw on your feet to help you gain an edge in the water? Swim fins, shin fins (also used as a curse word in some countries) or flippers? Perhaps you have a very special name for them (if so let us know). Here at DestinationWater.com we call them fins. Save Our Surf Surfathon With Oceana

A Great Day With Good Friends At Ocean Park!

On Sunday April 5th, CWIC sponsored the Save Our Surf Surfathon in Ocean Park. Save Our Surf is an organization started by actress Tanna Frederick and pro surfer Shaun Thomson where surfers and non surfers alike can give back while also keeping the oceans clean. Weather was great and celebrities were out in an effort to help Oceana, the world's largest ocean preservation organization, in their attempt to clean our World's beaches. The day began at 9 a.m. and included both pro and celeb surf competitions, mural painting and boogie board contests for the kids and a good time for everyone. Michelle Rodriguez, Eric Balfour, and David Chokachi were all there along with Pro surfers Rob Machado, Frank Caronna, and James Pribram and many more.

After the sun went down, fans and celebrities alike were invited to attend a "blue" carpet gala and silent auction at Shutters on the Beach that was also sponsored by the Save Our Surf Foundation. ER's Noah Wyle and actor Judd Nelson hosted the event along with director Henry Jaglom. CWIC offered an impressive arrangement of snorkel gear as items to be auctioned off, along with other sponsors who provided private surf lessons with a pro, art sculptures, and a Charlie Palmer celebrity chef dinner for 14 people.winnings included all from a 1/2 hour at home healing massage, a Wii game station or a $200 car detailing gift certificate. The day was huge success and a wonderful coming together of those who have a love and desire to keep the oceans beautiful. We had a great time and thank you so much to everyone that came out. Fun in the Water - A Swim Teacher's Thoughts

Water, water everywhere! Virtually, not matter which way we turn we can see some form of water, from the rain that falls on our noses, to the vast blue oceans, to backyard pools. We see both children and adults enjoying themselves in the water. And we can think back to a number of pastimes that saw us swimming like a fish, water skiing and surfing.

Most of us swimmers are recreational and have never thought of competing in an event, let alone the Olympics, yet we are fulfilled as we enjoy the soothing waters. I can remember as a kid pretending that I won a gold metal. I swam with all my might as an imaginary crowd cheered me on and when I touched the wall with a last minute lurch, I celebrated with my hands held high above the waters! And who can forget playing Marco Polo...I can still here my friends' voices answering, "Polo!" while I searched for them with my eyes closed. And then at night with all energy spent, I would sleep like a baby while dreaming of swimming like a dolphin in the sea.

Have you watched children as they splash around in the water and sing joyful songs? Too many times today, kids are staying in doors far too much. I challenge you to get them outside and into the water. Take them to a pool, rivers, lakes, and oceans. There they will feel liberation and find health.

I live in South Florida and have devoted my life to teaching children and adults to swim. For me, learning to swim came at an early age and in learning I had a few bad experiences, but in the end I found such confidence in knowing that I could overcome my fears and emerge stronger.

My motto is "Until the Whole World Swims" and this is my life mission - to work with students to find confidence which will pour into their daily lives outside of the water.

Children just love to be in the water, and I always tell parents that one of the most important things they can teach their child is what to do in case of an accidental fall. That is why I suggest that everyone should have formal training.

A little fun fact...did you know that most men don't think they can float on their backs? Ironically a little fishy named Mr. Blue says that if you keep your head back and your belly out, you can float just like him.

No matter what body of water you are in, swimming is the most fun and best form of exercise you can do for yourself! As the waters warm, I challenge you to get into the water as much as possible...there you will find fun, renewal and adventure!

What are the Ideal Conditions for Snorkeling?

The best time to go snorkeling is when the waves are small, the sun is shining and the weather is mild.

Large Waves don't only make snorkeling challenging, but the big waves disturb the peace of the ocean floor by churning up sand. This makes the water murky and decreases visibility. As a guideline, if surfers are in the area, the waves are probably too large for an ideal snorkeling experience.

Before you go out for the day check the surf report to make sure of conditions. A great resource is http://www.surfline.com/ for the latest info.

Many avid snorkelers prefer bays for their adventures. A bay provides an alcove-like shelter for smooth waters. The waves, currents and crosswinds will be minimal. Additionally, the water is also usually shallower, allowing for the viewing of sea life on the ocean floor.

It is also best to hit the beach when it is sunny out. Not only does the warm weather create a pleasant snorkeling experience, but sunlight increases visibility and brings out the true colors of the fish and coral.

What to Take with You on a Snorkeling Adventure

It's almost spring! The weather is beautiful and the ocean is getting warmer. What better day trip can you think of than packing up your gear and heading to the beach? It can be a great excursion for everyone from kids to adults. While loading up your picnic, swimsuits, towels and sunscreen don't forget the snorkel gear for the great adventure under the sea. Snorkeling is a great way to experience the ocean in a whole new light. Only a limited amount of equipment is necessary and most gear is both affordable and durable!

Besides what you have already packed for your beach excursion you will only need a mask, snorkel, and fins to get started.

Some items you may want to bring along are a kick board, hydrosling, and arm bands to help your child float. As well as, a rash guard or float shirt (for kids) with UV protection to prevent sunburn.

Snorkel Gear Tips - by Jeanine Sachs

I have been working on the CWIC Customer Support Team for 4 years and am always asked great questions that may help other water enthusiasts better enjoy their adventures. Today I'd love to share some surrounding the use of snorkels, snorkel & dive masks and fins.

How do you use mask and snorkel purge valves?

To clear a mask purge valve, simply hold onto the mask firmly with your hands, tilt your head forward and exhale through your nose. Any water within your mask will exit the purge valve.

A snorkel purge valve is cleared when you take a deep breath and blow with force. The water will then clear from the breathing passage.

How about a whistle built into a snorkel?
A whistle is a notify feature built into many of today's snorkels. Our whistles are designed to be heard from over 200 feet away. To use them, you must rise to the surface of the water, remove the snorkel from your mouth and blow with force into the whistle.

How do you know if a pair of fins fit properly?

Fins should fit snugly, yet allow for the free movement of your foot and ankle. There are many varieties to choose from, so make sure that you take the time to find a pair that is most comfortable for you.

Best way to keep a mask fog free?

The best way to avoid a foggy mask is to first purchase a high-quality mask with tempered glass lenses. Secondly, when you bring your mask home wash with hot soapy water (some snorkelers like to use toothpaste as a cleaning agent). Finally, you can apply Body Glove anti-fog gel to your lenses on the day of your adventure.

Safe Swimming

Drownings can occur very quickly and with little warning. A person will typically lose consciousness about two minutes after submersion, with irreversible brain damage occurring within four to six minutes.

While this is a scary thought, the good news is that drownings and near-drowning incidents are almost always preventable!

Everyone has the potential to be a confident swimmer. In the case of young children, they simply need some encouragement and a full knowledge of the basic How To's of swimming to get them on their way.

The older one gets, the scarier the thought of learning to swim becomes for many people. Older children and adults may face emotional obstacles to swimming. They may struggle with the negative memories of a loved one's drowning, a personal near drowning incident or something as simple as someone throwing them in a pool unexpectedly when they were young. Whatever the obstacle may be, there is always an opportunity to learn to become a safe swimmer.

Whether you own a pool or enjoy dips in oceans, rivers and lakes, here are some safety tips that can help you save lives:

Learn to swim properly. Regardless of age or skill level, there are always skills that can be improved. If you don't know how to swim at all, it's never too late to learn.
Always swim with a buddy.
Even if you are a good swimmer unforeseen accidents can occur, so it's in your best interest to have an adult or someone who knows how to swim nearby.
Never rely on a flotation device to keep you or your loved ones safe. If you put a flotation devices on your child, it's critical to still keep a close eye on them. Remember, it only takes two minutes under water to lose consciousness.
Educate yourself and your children. Find out where swimming lessons are taught and enroll your children and yourself in regular swim classes.
Practice as much as possible. Once you and your child learn the skills necessary for swimming, it is important to practice what you've learned so you won't forget.
Have fun and be wise in the water. Being in the water is so enjoyable that it can be easy to forget about water safety. Always keep an eye out for possible or hidden dangers.
Never leave bicycles, items with wheels or other toys around the pool area. Someone can easily trip and fall into the water unexpectedly.
If you have young children, put up a pool gate or fence to prevent your children from going into the pool without proper supervision.
Keep your sliding glass door locked if you have children and a pool that isn't fenced off or gated.
Make sure your backyard fence or gate is locked if you have a pool.

Finding Revitalization in Today's Economy - How the Ocean Changed a Life

Times are tough for millions of Americans these days, and when stressed we tend to withdraw and cut back on the many activities that offer mind regeneration and health. I went through a lay off two years ago as a result of my company losing key accounts. I didn't quite know what to do, except that I immediately needed to scramble to find new work opportunities. I would begin each day by sending my resume - I'd eat lunch while sending out more - I'd fall asleep at night researching opportunities. For quite some time, I secluded myself in my home waiting for an answer to my dilemma. A couple weeks went by and I was spending nearly the whole day in my PJ's, checking my e-mail every few minutes, barely going outside or interacting with my friends and family.

Finally, I received a call from one of my best friends who chastised me for my behavior. "We live 10 minutes from the beach," he half yelled. "Come with me to the beach and get your life in gear." My answer was that I wasn't going to waste precious time playing at the beach. My friend Scott responded, "I won't take no for an answer...I'll be there in 20 minutes. Be ready."

I pulled my pathetic self up from my couch, pushed my computer aside and gave in. On the way out the door, I grabbed my bag and cell phone. Scott grabbed my cell phone out of my hand and threw it on my couch. "No cell phone," he said. "You are going to take a break."

We arrived to our favorite beach on that sunny California weekday with beach toys in hand. The sun was shining, sky blue, and a warm breeze blowing in from Catalina. I remember jumping in the ocean and instantly feeling revitalized - all of my worries and frustrations disappeared. At the end of the day, I was able to put things into perspective and slept like a child for the first time since being laid off.

Scott and I made it a point to get back to our beach for a few hours at least 2 times a week. During those moments we ran around like kids, took long swims, took our masks and snorkels to view local sea creatures, and enjoyed feeling the sun on our faces.

Spending a few hours here and there away from my computer allowed for me to find the creativity and strength I needed to make it through a tough time. I ended up becoming a consultant for several companies...and wildly enough found my way to C Walters International, where I am allowed to share my love of the ocean, swimming, snorkeling and water sports.

The moral of the story is that if the ocean, a lake or pool is in your backyard, get out in the water!!! There I promise you will - find balance, strength, hope, simplicity and that all too ignored child within.

There are no admission fees to the water, so jump in!
